Adding gold paint to your coffee table can turn an inexpensive and plain piece into a glimmering work of art. Achieving the effect you desire may take several coats and a steady hand to accomplish since gold paints are a unique type of paint that has metallic bits floating in the paint. The chemistry of the paint requires that applications be fast as the paint will dry out quickly.
Instructions
1. Place a drop cloth over a worktable in a well-ventilated indoor area. Position the coffee table on top of the drop cloth.
2. Sand the existing finish off the coffee table. Most coffee tables have a sealer or glossy type paint finish. To use gold paints you need a flat or matte painted surface. Wipe the table clean with a tack cloth.
3. Paint the coffee table with a flat paint using a foam roller. Foam rollers will reduce streaking and tend to apply the paint more evenly. Allow the table to dry completely. This may take up to 24 hours.
4. Draw any design that is to be painted in gold onto the matte paint surface. If you can freehand the design, then skip this step.
5. Mix the gold paint well (and frequently) and paint it on the table in smooth, even strokes. Consider using a liner paint brush (a brush with long bristles) to apply a gold edge along features of the table. Use your hand as a depth guide. Do not go over your lines. If you have thin spots, wait until the gold paint dries completely and apply a second coat, otherwise the paint may curdle when you retouch it, which will look bad. Allow the paint to dry completely. Use solvent to clean your brushes immediately as the paint hardens fast.
6. Paint a clear coat sealer over the entire coffee table. This will produce a shine and it will protect the paint from scratches.
