When it comes to decorating, paint is an important element as it serves as the backdrop for the room. Paint comes in a myriad of colors and shades, so your options are virtually limitless. Before selecting your paint color, decide what look you are trying to achieve and choose a hue that ties into your design plans.
Beachy Vibe
If you're looking to create a beach-inspired room, you have several paint color options to choose from. For a relaxed look, choose a pale color palette that reflects the color of the ocean, such as ice blue or seafoam green. For a more upbeat, tropical room, go with a warm red, a sunny yellow or a green that has yellow undertones. You can also opt for a more neutral color scheme that mimics the color of the sand, such as tan or beige.
Opulent Oasis
Paint can help you turn a room into a luxurious retreat. Rich, jewel-toned colors are the ideal choice for this look -- ruby red, amethyst purple, emerald green or sapphire blue. While these colors are eye-catching, because they tend to be dark, they can close in a room. To avoid this, paint one or two walls in the shade you have chosen, and paint the remaining walls a lighter, complementary color. For example, if you've selected amethyst purple, choose a lighter shade of purple -- lilac, lavender or thistle -- to go with it.
Shabby Chic
A shabby chic room is light and airy and incorporates light shades or pastels. Sage green, pale pink and pastel purple all work well with this design style; however, be aware that too much of one of these colors can make the room appear overly feminine. To offset the light shades, bring in white as a neutral color. Paint the walls the shade you have selected, but paint the trim white. Another way to bring white into the space is with a chair rail or wainscoting.
Monochromatic Modern
A monochromatic color scheme is ideal for creating a modern design. Black and white or different shades of gray are the traditional shades used to achieve a monochromatic look, but you don't have to be limited to a colorless room. You can incorporate your favorite color into a monochromatic color scheme by selecting several different shades of the selected hue. If red is the chosen color, use different shades from dark to light -- for instance, brick, chestnut and burnt sienna. A variety of different finishes -- semi gloss, satin and flat -- will also help you achieve the monochromatic look.
