Bachelor Apartment Designing Ideas

A well-decorated apartment will impress any date.

A smartly decorated bachelor pad says a lot about a man. He cares about and takes pride in his environment, he's got taste and style. While he may look for a lovely woman to share his life with, he doesn't need one to mother him. A few changes can go a long way in creating a home that is practical, comfortable and attractive.

Colors

Never underestimate the power of a fresh coat of paint. A little color can transform an apartment. Don't fear going bold with colors like hunter green, cobalt blue, burgundy and burnt orange. Jewel tones and earth tones make a strong masculine impact. If you feel four richly-painted walls are too much for you, paint one accent wall in a bold or dark color, and paint the rest of the walls and the ceiling in neutral tones, like antique white, warm beige or light gray.

Furniture

When it comes to furniture in apartment decor, less is more. It's better to have fewer large, solid pieces than clutter your apartment with a lot of smaller furnishings. For instance, rather than having a book case, television stand and stereo cabinet occupy your living room wall, invest in a tall, wide piece to center on the wall that will house all of your books, electronics and entertainment items. Wood, marble or stone furnishings are warm, earthy and traditional. Metal, plastic or laminated furnishings are cool, sleek and modern. Leather is at home in any man's apartment. Select furniture in neutral colors so that they blend right in whenever you paint or move to a new home.

Storage

Get creative with storage so that your furniture is as functional as it is comfortable. A platform bed with drawers underneath can give you ample room to stow away seasonal clothing or extra bedding. Use ottomans that open to reveal hidden storage beneath the cushion so you can hide unsightly items, such as flashlights and batteries, that you need to keep on hand. Closet organizers with wire shelving and plastic drawers will maximize your hidden storage potential. A narrow shelf above the sink can hold wine glasses at the ready.

Windows

Keep window treatments sleek and streamlined to exude that confident masculine mood in your room. Stay away from frills, scallops and lace. Opt for straight-edge panels in solids, stripes, or bold-colored sheers. Alternately you can dispense with the fabric window treatments altogether and choose shades or blinds. Instead of cheap looking plastic or vinyl, invest in wood blinds, natural woven shades or striped Roman shades for a more sophisticated look.

Accessories

The minimalist style suits the bachelor apartment well. Not only is it less to worry about dusting, but it keeps the apartment looking uncluttered. A single, striking piece, such as a large vase with bare branches or ornately carved statue makes a better display than a dozen small knickknacks. If you do want to show off a collection, make it look more refined by placing a curio cabinet or grouping it on decorative shelves with its own lighting to highlight it. Wall hangings also make more of an impact if you choose single, larger pieces. Mount and frame all photos and even posters to give them a finished appearance.
