A simple night at home can be just as romantic as an evening on the town.
Sometimes, the responsibilities of work, home and family can be overwhelming, and one of the first casualties is the romance between you and your husband. You know that date nights are important for reconnecting and keeping the spark alive, but getting a babysitter and heading out for a night on the town is both expensive and exhausting after a long day at work. Date nights don't have to involve fancy restaurants, though. You can plan a romantic evening at home for your husband, allowing you to enjoy each other's company without the distractions and expense of a traditional date night.
Instructions
1. Get a babysitter, preferably one that can take the kids overnight. Ask a friend or family member to take the kids for the night; give them money for dinner and a movie to get the kids out of the house.
2. Send your husband a flirty text message or email letting him know that you have a romantic evening planned for him. While a surprise is nice, if he knows what you're planning, he'll be less likely to work late or dawdle on his way home from work.
3. Plan a romantic dinner. Avoid complicated, heavy menus that require you to spend a lot of time in the kitchen, and stick to simple favorites. If your husband has a favorite meal, make that, or choose something that you can make together, such as homemade pizza or grilled steaks.
4. Clean up the house and remove clutter and reminders of your busy lives; for example, hide the laptops, kids' toys, sports equipment and the stack of unpaid bills. Create an environment that will allow you to focus on each other.
5. Create a background music playlist to set the mood. Include romantic standards, your wedding song and songs that remind you of your best times together. Other options include mellow jazz or classical piano or guitar arrangements.
6. Set the mood with lighting. Use dimmers, and light candles around the room. Light a fire in the fireplace; set out a bottle of wine and some glasses to encourage snuggling by the fire.
7. Rent a movie that you will both enjoy and can watch while snuggling together under a cozy blanket. A romantic film is a possible choice, but don't overlook comedies that will get you laughing together.
8. Play a game together. Some friendly competition can get you laughing together. Raise the stakes by offering a prize to the winner, such as a foot or back rub.
9. Move the date outside. In the summer, set up a twilight picnic in the backyard with chilled wine and strawberries; in the winter, huddle together with a hot drink and a blanket and watch the stars.
10. Take some time getting yourself ready for your romantic evening. You don't have to get all dolled up, but adding a little makeup or perfume helps make the evening feel like more than just another night on the couch.
