Develop A Vacation Cabin For $100

You may want to build a log cabin for a get-away retreat. If you have access to some land and its resources, you may be able to build a log cabin inexpensively. Although it takes careful planning and huge economizing, you may build one for about $100.

Instructions

1. Pick out a location for your log cabin, preferably close to a wooded area. If you are close to the woods, transporting logs is much faster and easier. Choose your log sizes carefully. Trees about 9 to 10 inches in diameter make logs that are easiest to move, while still giving you good support for your walls. Make sure your logs are as straight as possible. This allows less shaving when erecting your walls.

2. Lay out the perimeters of your walls first when you build a log cabin (hopefully, for $100). It's best to raise the floor about 2 to 3 feet so that you have air circulation and less chance of termites penetrating your wood. Dig pier holes for your wood pylons (upright poles your floor attaches to). You must use rock and concrete to secure the poles.

3. Shave the bark off of your timber when you build a log cabin. This allows you to see how straight your logs are. Use a flat axe to straighten your logs. Take a bow saw (or cross-cut saw) and cut your logs to the desired lengths, depending on what size cabin you want to build.

4. Notch your logs on each end so they lock in place when you stack one on top of the other for your walls. Notching makes the walls secure. Notching requires cutting half-way into the log. Take that piece out so the other log that's notched half-way locks into its position.

5. Cut the logs into 14-inch pieces. Split these logs so they make about 1-inch thick pieces. You may use these as your roof. Start at the bottom of the roof and nail your split pieces across your roof-line. Overlap the next row and continue to the top of your roof.

6. Concrete and nails (if you want a window, you must buy a piece of glass) and some hinges for your door are all you need.
