Molding should complement a room's color scheme.
The molding of a room provides a buffer between the wall and connecting items such as doors, windows, flooring and the ceiling. Because these features are often different colors from the walls, the best colors for molding are ones that complement the overall color scheme to the room.
White
Perhaps the most popular color for molding and trim, white is a bright and cheerful color that has the added benefit of being compatible with most wall and floor colors and textures. Lighter colors such as yellow, baby blue and lilac are complemented by the brightness of white molding, while darker colors such as plum, gray and brown contrast pleasantly with white, bringing out its brilliance. The whitest shades of molding are difficult to keep clean, but several shades of off-white, including egg-shell and linen, provide similar brilliance and require less rigorous cleaning and maintenance.
Sugar Maple
A dark, warm wood with large age lines, sugar maple works well with both cool and warm neutrals, as well as white walls. This wood color is lighter than other woods but has a finished look that lends a feeling of luxury to the room. Sugar maple molding has a medium-dark color that complements both lighter and darker color wood floors.
Bisque
A common color for molding, bisque combines the brightness and reflective nature of white with the warmth of darker beige. The result is a molding color that blends in better with surrounding room colors. Bisque molding is compatible with carpeting as well as hardwood floors, and works particularly well with warm, neutral wall colors on walls such as soft suede and olivewood.
Mahogany
Mahogony is a deep, dark color derived from the dense wood of the same name. This color for molding complements other dark neutrals, such as chocolate brown shades, but also complements whites and creams. Mahogany is best matched to dark wood floors.
Black
Although not the conventional choice, black molding can build distinctive character for a room. Used in contrast with white and light cream colors, black clearly defines room edges and boundaries. Black is suitable for both hardwood floors and carpets.
