Diy Fresh paint Exterior Latex Over Vinyl Clad Door

A roller used to apply paint to large areas

A vinyl door is capable of receiving paint if the proper preparations are made. Smooth and high-gloss vinyl may require light sanding work before coating with a quality primer designed for plastics and polymers.

Instructions

1. For glossy and ultra-smooth vinyl, lightly rough the surface with fine-grain sandpaper. Mend any cracks or holes with an appropriate filler. Clean the door with heavy-duty cleaner, and dry with a lint-free cloth.

2. Prepare the work area by positioning tarps and dropcloths, making sure to mask off molding and trim with a low-adhesive tape. Ensure there is sufficient ventilation, and wear a mask or respirator if necessary.

3. Use a brush, roller, or spray device to apply a coat of primer. Follow the specific instructions found on the primer can. Wait for the surface to dry, and apply a second coat if necessary.

4. Mix paint well to ensure even distribution. Use a clean roller and brush to apply thin coats of latex paint to the primed surface, while avoiding thick buildups that may later chip and peel. Wait for the latex to fully dry before applying additional coats, and try to use no more than two coats for complete color coverage.

5. Clean all painting equipment, and reseal any leftover paint in airtight containers. Record the specific brands and pigments for future touch-ups.
