Make Nontoxic Fresh paint

Make your own non-toxic paint with a few household items.

Sure, you could go down to the local hardware store and pick-up a gallon of regular paint, but if you have small children, or want to do something more environmentally friendly, you can make your own non-toxic paint. This cuts down on the chemical smell created by most commercial paints, and is better for your overall health and the environment.

Instructions

1. Pour the milk into the large container and let it warm to room temperature. Measure out two cups of white vinegar, using the measuring cups. Then stir it into the milk, using a wooden spoon. Leave the large container in a warm spot for 24 to 48 hours, but do not stir it any further.

2. Measure out 200 grams of pigment powder, using the gram scale. Place the pigment powder into a plastic container and add the same amount of water. Stir the pigment into the water to form a paste.

3. Measure out 112 grams of hydrated lime powder type S, with the gram scale, then pour it into another plastic container, making sure not to get it onto your skin or in your eyes. Carefully and slowly pour 1 1/2 cups of water into the plastic container with the lime, then stir it with a wooden spoon to mix it together thoroughly into a paste.

4. Place a colander over the sink and line the inside with cheesecloth. Pour the curds and whey created by the milk and vinegar mixture into the cheesecloth to separate the components and create a quark. Run cool water over the quark and let any excess water drain through the cheesecloth, but don't allow it to dry completely, as you want it to be still dripping wet.

5. Put the quark into the paint bucket by folding up the cheesecloth and dropping it into the bucket. Pour the lime mixture into the bucket and stir it well, using the wooden spoon. Break down some of the large chunks in the quark with the spoon.

6. Pour some of the pigment into the paint can, stirring it with a wooden spoon as you go -- so you get the color as close to your desired shade as possible. Add water if necessary, to get a consistency of a light cream

7. Strain the paint mixture through the cheesecloth one last time, then stir it again. Apply the paint as quickly as possible.
