Fresh paint Your Personal Tableware

Take some plain plates and create designer dinnerware to suit your dining room.

Sometimes finding that perfect gift or the perfect gravy boat to match Grandmother's butter dish is just impossible. Fortunately you can customize your own dinnerware to match the d cor of your newly-wed friend's dining room, or to express your own style on your table. There are studios that will charge you to paint your own pieces and take them home, but you can complete this craft at home with just a few supplies and an oven. Painting dinnerware is simple enough that kids can join in the fun too; pick up some plates from a dollar store or craft store and let them design their own place settings.

Instructions

1. Sketch a design to replicate on your dinnerware so you know what you want it to look like before you start painting. You can use ceramic, glass or "greenware" for this project; do not use plastic dishes. Clean all the pieces with soap and water and dry thoroughly.

2. Using the a natural bristle paint brush, recreate your design on your dinnerware. For small intricate detail, use a small brush; if you are painting the whole piece or a large area of it all one color, use a large brush.

3. Sweep the brush along the piece all in the same direction. Plates will look cleaner with only vertical strokes, while cups and bowls will look neater with horizontal ones. Wipe excess paint off of the brush each time you put more paint on it in order to avoid goopy, uneven spots.

4. Paint several coats to achieve deeper colors. Allow paint to dry in between applying coats of paint. Put your dinnerware in the oven according to the instructions on the paint bottle. For many paints you will use a low temperature and bake for only a short time.
