Does your house have asbestos siding? If you want to change the look of the outside siding without the high expense of removal plus new siding installation, simply paint over it. Although painting is a simpler solution, asbestos is something that everyone needs to be cautious not to disturb or it can become a health hazard. This is the safest way to deal with asbestos siding.
Instructions
1. Check the weather. Choose a warm day, but not so warm that it is miserable to work outside. Also if you have a big house you may want to have a helper to minimize time. Put on protective gear. Wear gloves, a mask and safety glasses at all times. If any shingles are lifted, you do not want to breathe in or get any asbestos on you.
2. Mix the solution. Use a mild soap plus water to make a good cleaning solution in your bucket. Securely set the ladder up. Get help if you do not feel safe climbing and washing on a ladder alone. Wash the shingles. Scrubbing with a soft bristle brush will not disturb asbestos in shingles. You must wash all the shingles with the soap and water solution. This will give you a nice, clean canvas to paint on.
3. Rinse the house with the water hose. Do not leave any soap to dry on the siding. Once the house is rinsed good let it dry completely before painting.
4. Paint the shingles with a masonry primer. Using the paintbrush, paint the entire house with the latex masonry primer. Let the house dry again.
5. Paint the shingles with the best quality latex paint available your choice of color.
