Estimate Wood Fence Stain

Wood fences are stained to protect against weather.

Staining a wooden fence improves the appearance of the fence while adding protection for the wood against the elements. When staining a wooden fence, it is important to know the amount of stain to purchase so that the entire project is completed at the same time rather than finding that the stain runs out halfway though. Estimating the wood stain requires some simple calculations that ensure enough stain is purchased for the full project.

Instructions

1. Measure the height of the fence. Place the end of the measuring tape at the bottom of the fence, and drag it up to the top. Note the height in feet, such as 4 feet tall.

2. Measure the length of the fence area being stained. Have a helper hold the measuring tape at one end of the fence length so that the end is against the fence. Walk along the length of the fence until you reach the end of the fence or section of fence being stained. Put the measuring tape against the fence, and then note the measurement in feet.

3. Multiply the length and height of the fence. For example, if the fence is 4 feet tall and 100 feet long, the square footage of the fenced area is 400 square feet. If staining both sides of the fence, multiply the 400 by two for the final number of 800 square feet.

4. Select a stain. Look at the amount of square footage the stain covers. If the can of stain material covers 200 square feet, the project will need four wood stain containers to cover an 800 square foot fence.
