Design My Room

A room of your own is one of life's most delightful pleasures. Your own room can serve as a place to sleep, pay bills or just read quietly and escape from the rest of the world. Design a room to meet your desires as well as your essential needs, and you'll have a space that truly feels like home.

Instructions

1. Start with color. Think about the colors you like. Colors can create different moods. Lighter colors such as light blue or yellow can make a room feel cheerier and sunnier. Darker colors can be dramatic and intense. A neutral color such as white or beige can act as a tranquil background for artwork.

2. Decide on wall coverings. Paint is easy to apply even if you aren't a professional painter. Paint is also inexpensive and comes in just about any imaginable color. Another wall covering choice is wallpaper. Wallpapers can create design elements even in a room otherwise devoid of character. If you have never done wallpapering before, consider hiring someone to do it for you.

3. Choose flooring. There are many different flooring choices. Wood is easy on the feet, looks quite elegant and complements many different décor choices. Carpeting comes in a wide variety of colors and can help dampen noise. Use rugs on top of either flooring choice to add detail and color.

4. Pick out window treatments. Window treatments such as curtains and blinds help muffle sound, provide shade and make a room look finished. Curtains can range from inexpensive sheers to more elaborate floor-to-ceiling choices costing thousands of dollars. Blinds are an excellent way to control the amount of light that comes into the room. You can purchase metal or wooden blinds.

5. Add furniture. A well-designed room of your own should have a bed and chest of drawers. You can also add a work desk and chair, as well as a chaise lounge for sitting. Beds come in many different styles from four poster to water bed to bunk beds. Make the room more efficient with added storage. Purchase shelving units and organizers to make better use of existing space.

6. Create detail. Make the room feel completely your own with small touches. Stencil a design of your choosing on the wall. Purchase bed linens that mirror your tastes. Add a canopy over the bed and prints on the walls.
