Give a stucco home curb appeal with a fresh coat of paint.
A stucco substrate on a home can fade when exposed to direct sunlight, and a new coat of paint can give the house's exterior a fresh look. Before painting your home, it is important to make sure the substrate is in good condition and free of cracks. Paint companies recommend using acrylic latex paint on a stucco house because they are the easiest to handle, apply and clean. Moreover, acrylic latex products dry quickly and retain color well.
Instructions
Repair Exterior Cracks
1. Brush a brushable elastomeric sealant into cracks on the outside of a stucco house that are an eighth of an inch or less. Seek professional assistance for larger cracks.
2. Shade the areas where you added the sealant if the weather is hot so it does not dry out too quickly.
3. Wait until the weather is warmer if the outside temperature is below 40 degrees Fahrenheit or is expected to fall below that temperature in the near future.
Clean and Prepare the Outside of the House
4. Remove grease, mildew, loose paint, dust and chalk from the stucco home using a power washer on a light pressure setting.
5. Use a stucco cleaning solution on the house, if needed, to assist with cleaning and touch stains, such as water stains from sprinklers.
6. Add moisture protection to the home's exterior before painting by caulking around flashing, doors, light fixtures and around windows.
Repaint the Stucco House
7. Apply a masonry primer to the stucco house and allow it to dry.
8. Fill a paint sprayer with the acrylic latex paint you chose and set the pressure control knob to a low setting.
9. Test the sprayer with a piece of cardboard. Pull the trigger on the sprayer quickly to see there is a solid spray pattern. If not, slightly increase the pressure and perform the test again. Continue this process until the sprayer releases paint in a uniform manner that does not run or have gaps.
10. Hold the paint sprayer 12 inches away from the stucco wall and begin painting the house. Move your arm so it is perpendicular to the wall to maintain an even spray pattern.
11. Overlap each spray stroke by half. After finishing a spray stroke, aim the sprayer toward the bottom edge of the previous stroke so the paint overlaps.
