Install Cellular Pvc Exterior Trim

New products on the market simulate the look of wood without any of the hassles. One of the new "woods" is cellular PVC exterior trim. This faux wood holds paint but the paint isn't necessary to protect it. It's already impervious to the elements and often comes with a lengthy warranty. The cost of the product is similar to cedar but it pays for itself with longevity.

Instructions

1. Know that cellular PVC exterior trim, also known as PVC foam trim, is similar to polyurethane boards, costs about half as much as the polyurethane, but performs just as well.

2. Leave the trim white if you like the color, rather than painting. Unlike its cousin, polyurethane, it doesn't require any additional paint. If you decide you want a different color, wipe the cellular PVC exterior trim with alcohol before you begin to paint.

3. Use acrylic paint on the cellular PVC trim. If you choose a dark color, opt for Sherman Williams "Vinyl Safe" paint.

4. Cut the cellular PVC trim with normal woodcutting tools. Use carbide tipped blades but avoid fine-toothed ones. Keep your blades sharp, support the extruded plastic board and avoid excessive friction when you cut. These cause rough edges.

5. Avoid tools made for hard standard PVC when you drill. Use only drills created for wood. Keep the friction down to a minimum when you drill the cellular PVC exterior trim.

6. Route, mill and finish the edges with the same tools that you normally use for wood. Milling requires a relief angle of 20 to 30 degrees. Carbide tips for the router tools are preferred.

7. Allow for 1/8 inch of expansion and contraction per 18 feet of material. Glue between joints to prevent separation. Allow for contraction and expansion at the end of a long run if you glue in between. Use 2 fasteners per board when you attach the cellular PVC exterior trim, unless the board is bigger than 12 inches wide, then use more. Locate the fastener at least 2 inches from the board's end.
