It is possible to paint your own address sign.
A sign outside your home with your address on it doesn't have to be a mass-produced, boring, store-bought plaque. It is possible to create your own sign and make it expressive of the character of your home and those who live inside it. Using paint - preferably on a wood surface - is the best way to create an interesting address sign, and from then on the possibilities are endless.
Instructions
1. Purchase a blank wooden canvas designed for use as an address sign for a home.
You will find these in many major hardware and home improvement stores. Be sure to buy a blank one as oppose to one with a preprinted pattern or house number.
2. Apply a coat of primer liberally, using a paint brush.
This should be a fairly neutral color and simply provide a base for the more important colors which will make up the numbers, lettering or the address. A color similar to the natural color of the wood would be appropriate.
3. Use stencils and pencil to draw the shapes and design of your text and numbers once the primer is dry.
Decide which colors you want to use in each area before buying the paint.
4. Purchase a latex paint in each of the colors you require.
Ensure that they will adhere to wood by asking a worker in the store.
5. Use a paintbrush to carefully paint your sign, filling in the stenciled numbers and letters in the colors you chose.
6. Wait for the paint to dry and then coat your sign with a layer of varnish or shellac.
This will provide the sign with a glossy finish and ensure that the inclement weather conditions do not affect the sign as it hangs outside your home.
