Fresh paint Sheet Rock

Using primer can save you money in the long run.

Also known as drywall and plaster board, sheet rock is a sheet of gypsum, sandwiched between two layers of thick, strong paper. It is used for interior construction to build walls and ceilings. After being nailed to a wooden frame, sheet rock is taped at the seams where the large pieces abut. The seams are covered with joint compound and the entire surface may be sanded smooth or textured by further applications of compound before painting.

Instructions

1. Vacuum the walls, ceiling and floor with a shop vacuum. Use the brush attachment to thoroughly remove the dust caused by sanding jointed seams.

2. Wipe down the ceiling and walls with a tack cloth. Take the cloth outside occasionally to shake it out. Use a new cloth if the first one becomes too saturated with dust to continue working.

3. Prime the walls with a latex primer designed to seal new sheet rock. Use a small, angled brush to apply primer around trim, in corners and where the wall meets the ceiling. Fill in the rest of the areas with a paintbrush saturated in primer. Roll on the primer using a large "W" pattern until all of the sheet rock has been evenly covered. Apply a second layer of primer after the first is completely dry, typically in about one hour.

4. Apply paint around trim and in the corners of the room with an angled brush. Paint the rest of the walls using the same "W" technique you used to apply primer. Apply a second layer of paint, if needed, only after the first is dry.
