However, one of the most common objects found in nature can be the best canvas for some of the most beautiful and interesting projects. Rocks are simple to paint, hold their design for years and can be used to create thoughtful items that people can use. Whether the crafter is an avid or novice painter, rock painting can be an enjoyable art.
Garden Memorial
A heavy rock with a rounded bottom and flat front is perfect for a garden memory stone. The rock can be painted to in honor of a loved one or a favorite pet who has passed. Acrylic paint ensures longevity, while adding a coat of finishing spray will add shine to the finished project. The rock should be washed prior to painting, and porous rocks get the best results because they retain paint better. You can paint your memorial rock one solid color and add the name of the person or pet being memorialized, or you can get creative and paint a picture. Either way, it will be something you will enjoy seeing in your garden, hopefully triggering many happy memories of the one who was lost.
Doorstops
Heavy rocks the size of a fist or larger make excellent doorstops. Smooth granite rocks are an excellent choice for this project as they are heavy and take paint well because they are porous. For durability and waterproofing, use an acrylic paint with a spray sealer for an attractive sheen. You can paint any design you want on your doorstop, but you might want to consider coordinating it with the other decor in your home, particularly in the room where the doorstop will be used.
Ladybug Rock
Painting a rock as a ladybug can be a project for a child or an adult. You will need a round, symmetrical rock about the size of the palm of an adult hand. Acrylic paints are always the best choice when rock painting because of their durability. Start by washing the rock thoroughly. Paint the rock red on both top and bottom, allowing each side to dry before painting the other. Add a black line down the middle of the rock to define the wing casings and black dots for the ladybug's spots. Use blue for the ladybug's eyes and white for antennae and facial features. Finish her with a good coat of acrylic finishing spray to seal the paint and keep her from chipping.
Portraits on Rock
Painting rocks presents a new challenge to the avid portrait painter. The painter may even get inspiration by the shape of the rock he has chosen to work with.
