Repaint A Birdbath

Plastic birdbaths are inexpensive, lightweight and durable. However, there aren't many color choices available. In fact, most of the time, it can be difficult to find any color other than white. Using non-toxic spray paint that won't harm birds, you can paint your birdbath to match your home's exterior or garden motif. Spray paint usually dries to the touch in 15 minutes and dries for use in one hour.

Instructions

1. Empty the birdbath, and use an ammonia-based cleaner and a sponge to clean both the bowl and stand. If the bowl is stained, use a scrub brush to remove as much of the residue as you can. Rinse and dry, thoroughly.

2. Using paint thinner, wipe down any new plastic that has not yet been exposed to the elements. This ensures that the spray paint adheres to the surface of the birdbath the best it can. Apply the paint thinner with a clean, dry rag, and then remove any excess with a second clean rag.

3. Shake the spray paint can well, and spray the birdbath in short, steady bursts. Hold the spray can approximately 8 to 10 inches from the birdbath. Spray in a side-to-side sweeping motion.

4. Apply a thin layer of spray paint first; allow it to dry for approximately 30 seconds. Apply another two coats on top of the base coat. You should wait at least 30 seconds between the two main coats. Allow the painted birdbath to dry completely for at least one hour.

5. Once the birdbath is completely dry, you can handle the birdbirth, and place it in an out-of-the-way area to cure. The paint needs a minimum of seven days to cure before it's completely scratch- and chip-resistant. After the waiting period, you can place the birdbath in the garden, and fill it with water for safe bird use.
