Colors For Verandas

Natural or earthy porch colors work well on a variety of homes.

Porch color is an important choice to make for the overall appearance of your home and for curb appeal. An inviting porch color welcomes people to you house, while unattractive porch colors give people a bad first impression of your home's design. It is important for the porch color to match your home's exterior. Your choice of porch colors is nearly unlimited; just be sure that it matches your home and personality, is consistent with your home's architectural style and that it is a color you can live with for years to come.

Architectural Homes and Porch Colors

The architectural design of your home can help you choose a porch color. For example, earthy tones like dark red, brown, yellow and indigo work well on colonial or Tuscan-style homes. Victorian homes often have vibrant porch colors such as blue, yellow, plum, deep red or deep green. Tropical homes often have porch colors to match the tropical surroundings like tan, beige, green, medium blue, white or brown. Southwestern style homes typically have muted and warm porch colors, such as orange, yellow, green or blue shades. Use creamy colors like off-white, beige, white or green on a cottage porch.

Effects of Different Porch Colors

Colors create various effects or moods for your porch. If you want your porch to be a place for frequent conversations, choose a warm color such as orange, yellow or red. Warm colors are welcoming for guests, and match well with north-facing porches or porches with woods views.

If you use your porch as a personal sanctuary where you relax or enjoy quiet dinners, choose a calming color like blue, violet or green. White complements almost any color, and signifies purity or joy according to Front Porches and More. However, a white porch can sometimes look bland, especially if you house is white, so use it as an accent color or add additional color to your white porch with the decor.

Use the Color Wheel

Colors opposite of each other on the color wheel often work well together in a color scheme. So, look at colors opposite of your home's exterior for porch color ideas. For example, red and green, blue and orange or yellow and purple are all opposite colors on the color wheel. If that is too much color for your taste, try some of the neutral colors like brown, black, gray or white. Neutral colors are stylish and match most exterior home color schemes.
