Repair A Stuccosided House

Matching the stucco texture might be the most difficult part of this project.

Repairing a stucco-sided house can usually be done by the homeowner who is willing to put a little effort into his own home. With some guidance and patience, you can tackle this task like a pro. Freezing temperatures and hot, dry days interfere with the curing process. Choose a block of days when the temperature will not drop below 40 F, and the days are humid. Work in the shade, if possible.

Instructions

1. Put on protective eyewear and gloves.

2. Break off the loose stucco with a hammer until you reach an area that is firmly attached to the wood lath inside the wall. Snip off exposed old mesh.

3. Cover the exposed lath with heavy duty tar paper. Fasten it with roofing nails, then nail on a second layer of paper.

4. Cut the new mesh to size and nail it onto the wall.

5. In a wheelbarrow, mix the stucco for the first coat, following this recipe: 1/2 bag portland cement, 6 shovels of sand, 1 shovel of lime and 1/2 cup bonding agent.

6. Apply the new stucco with a trowel. Pack it into the mesh until it is roughly 1/2 inch below the surface of the wall. Smooth it out, wait for the wet sheen to disappear, cover it with a sheet of plastic to keep it moist and allow to rest for four days.

7. Mix the stucco for the second coat as you did the first, except add 8 shovels of sand instead of 6.

8. Remove the plastic sheet and wet down the stucco. Make random cuts in the stucco with the trowel -- this helps the second coat of stucco adhere better by giving it something to "grab."

9. Apply the second coat, which should be about 3/8 of an inch thick. Smooth the stucco out. After the wet sheen disappears, cover the wall with a plastic sheet and allow to rest for three days.

10. Mix the final batch of stucco as you did for the second layer. Apply it to the wall, making it even with the rest of the wall. Match the texture design as best you can. Allow to cure for one week before painting.
