Interactive Designing Games

Players may decorate kitchens and other rooms when playing interactive decorating games.

Decorating gives people the opportunity to express their creative side, choosing colors, items and patterns to stylize exteriors and interiors of homes, rooms and other places of residence or business. Interactive decorating games provide an outlet for those with a flair for decorative design to try out numerous decors with the click of a mouse.

The Dan Ho Show

Wellness expert Dan Ho offers decorating lessons to players preparing to have guests over at "The Dan Ho Show," accessible at Discovery Health site. Players explore four rooms, rearranging furniture as they see fit, and using accessories to enhance style; players also may clean various items with a sponge. As players make their decorating choices, an animated Dan provides tips. Each move costs players time and impacts comfort level, the latter of which players must watch at the bottom of the screen. The more blue that runs across the "Comfort Level/Timer" meter, the more comfortable guests will feel. When the finger reaches the doorbell, the guests arrive and players find out their score out of a possible 100.

Polly Pocket Beautiful Bedroom

Players decorate Polly Pocket's bedroom in this game, accessible at the Mattel site. The picture bar at the bottom of the screen shows different parts of the room; players click on the part they want to change, such as the dresser, bed, wall, ceiling decor, play station, pet and window/outside view. Players click the backward and forward arrows to see how different styles look, and click "Play" to see the full view.

Surprise Party Decorating

Aside from decorating a living room for a birthday party, players also decorate the birthday cake when playing "Surprise Party Decorating," accessible at the Girl Games 1 site. Players choose colors and decorations for cabinets, carpet, floor, lamp, table and walls.

When decorating the cake, players choose the design for the top and bottom layers as well as the frosting color, and may make designs or write something on the cake. Players click and drag other cake decorations from the bottom of the screen to the cake; to dispose of a decoration, players drag it off the cake area.

Color This!

While not really a game, Better Homes and Gardens' "Color This!" tool allows site users to practice their decorative design skills on homes' exteriors and interiors. The tool includes three features: "Color-a-House," "Color-a-Room" and "Try-a-Window-Treatment." Upon registering at the site and logging in, users may access all of the features by clicking the headers at the top of the game's screen.

For "Color-a-Home," users click "Select a home" from the panel on the right side of the screen, and choose from among the following home types: "Bungalow & Cottage," "Cape Cod & Colonial," "Contemporary," "Craftsman Inspired," "French," "Spanish," "Tudor" and "Victorian." After choosing a home from among those choices, the home appears to the left of the panel. Users click "Color this!" to choose parts of the home's exterior that they want to color.

When working with "Color-a-Room," users have the option of choosing "Bathrooms," "Bedrooms," "Dining Rooms," "Foyer," "Living Rooms," "Kids' Rooms" and "Kitchens." After choosing a room from among those choices, users highlight the part of the room for which they want to change the color and/or pattern.

For the "Try-a-Window-Treatment" section, users choose from among "French Doors," "Standard Window" or "Transom Windows." After choosing a window from among those options, users highlight the parts for which they want to alter the color and/or pattern of various styles. For all three parts of the game, users may save decorations they like and share with friends.
