Finding a nontoxic way to remove paint from your woodwork will keep the environment safe and the natural quality of the remover will preserve the woodwork as well. There are a few different nontoxic options to remove paint from your woodwork. You can create a solution yourself or use a commercial nontoxic paint remover.
Do-It-Yourself
According to planetgreen.discovery.com, you can create a nontoxic paint remover using simple, everyday materials. Mix three parts rubbing alcohol with one part lemon juice. Use a rag to apply the solution to the woodwork. Work the paint away with a scrubbing brush. Apply more solution as it dries. It may take some time and effort, but you should be able to clean your woodwork with this formula. According to planetgreen.discovery.com, this solution was able to remove dried latex paint from wood floors.
Commercial Nontoxic Paint Removers
If the above solution fails, there are several commercial options available. Paintremoval.com offers a product called "Peel Away Smart Strip." The solution is all natural and 100 percent biodegradable. As advertised, this solution is said to be strong enough to remove architectural and industrial coats of paint from a number of different surfaces, including wood.
Similar to paintremoval.com's product is a product made by P&D Creative Company, Inc. called Magic 555. This solution is also 100 percent biodegradable and nontoxic. This product removes a number of different paints and coatings, including catalyzed varnish, enamel paint, acrylic paint and polyurethane paint. You can spray or brush Magic 555 onto your woodwork, wait about 20 minutes, and then scrape away the paint.
