Painting a pumpkin is a creative alternative to carving one.
Every Halloween, children and adults traditionally carve jack-o-lantern faces into pumpkins. However, you can create a more detailed design and avoid the mess of hollowing out and carving the pumpkin by painting a person's face on the pumpkin. Recreate the likeness of a friend, family member, historical figure, celebrity or even yourself when you paint your one-of-a-kind pumpkin.
Instructions
1. Select a pumpkin in the shape of the face you plan to paint. Find a pumpkin that doesn't have any blemishes, unless you know you can incorporate them into the design. For example, if the face you're painting has a scar across its cheek, look for a pumpkin with a similar marking.
2. Clean all dirt and dust off the pumpkin with a wet paper towel.
3. Paint the entire pumpkin with a multi-purpose sealer or a matte spray sealer. This coat will create a surface that the paint will more easily adhere to. Let it dry completely.
4. Sketch an outline of the face on the pumpkin using a water-based marker, which can be erased with a wet paper towel if you make a mistake. Use a photograph, magazine clipping or live model as inspiration for the face. You can also look into a mirror to draw a likeness of yourself. Look at the shape of the features -- including the eyes, nose, mouth, cheeks, forehead and chin -- and try to recreate these on the pumpkin. You might not be able to exactly copy the face, but these general shapes and spacing will help to create a good likeness.
5. Use acrylic paints to color in the face you sketched. Use thick paintbrushes to paint large areas and finer ones for the details. When the shapes are filled in with color, outline the facial features with black paint to add definition.
6. Let the paint dry, then spray the entire pumpkin with a matte spray sealer. This will protect the paint and hold it in place on the pumpkin.
