Fresh paint Color Suggestions For Family Room Walls

The right color on your living room walls can tie together your decorating scheme.

Your living room is the most public space in your house. If you put time and thought into decorating your living room, you will be rewarded with a satisfying space where you, your family and friends may gather comfortably for many years to come. For this reason, it is important to choose the right color for your living room walls.

Neutrals

Neutral colors include creams, grays, whites and soft beiges. These are the safest, easiest to match colors. Neutrals are appropriate for almost every situation, so if your living room has no clear design or color scheme, a neutral color is almost certain to suit your needs. The downside of neutral colors is that these colors tend to be impersonal and they're often not as interesting as brighter or more saturated choices.

Warm and Cozy

Warm colors on the color wheel include red, orange and yellow. Warm colors are associated with passion, energy, action and affection. These are good associations for a family-oriented public room like a living room. If you wish to choose a warm color for your living room, consider deep golds, golden browns and soft copper colors. Natural brown leather furniture, bare wooden floors and fabrics in colors like cream and brown are good accessories for a room painted in warm tones. Use greens or blues dispersed as accent colors in small doses around the room, such as on pillows and lampshades.

Cool Elegance

The cool colors on the color wheel include blues, greens and purples. These colors have associations with peace, serenity, life and low temperatures. Cool colors include sky blue, sage green and gray-lavender. Cool-colored walls match well with cool-colored furniture or even neutral-colored furniture; complement the walls with accessories in cream, gray and blue-gray hues. For accents in complementary colors, look for soft golds or muted copper colors. Pillows and other cloth items in the room should be made from natural fabrics like cotton and linen, to be in keeping with the calm and earthy nature of the color of the walls.

Bold and Unexpected

Most people choose one or two conservative colors to paint their living room walls because the living room is the most public place in the house, and that which is traditional is usually safe and accepted. However, if you want to make a striking statement with your living room, you may need to think outside the box. Maybe you've just purchased ultra-modern, sleek, black and white living room furniture and now you want some bright red walls to stand in contrast. Maybe you can't decide on a single color for your living room and you're thinking of sponge painting two or three colors onto the walls, or you're thinking of painting an accent wall. Don't shy away from an idea just because it's different, loud or you've never seen it done before. Remember, you can always repaint.
