Painting a laundry room adds visual impact. It is a preventive measure that helps to reduce the growth of mold in the damp rooms of the home and makes cleanup easy when the walls get dirty--if the right steps are taken and the right products are used.
Supplies
Buy mold-resistant, waterproof, washable paint and primer. Mold-resistant paint offers important protection in a laundry room or back hall entry because these areas tend to be damp and prone to the growth of dangerous molds. Other needed supplies may include sandpaper, plaster to fill holes and cracks, and sealant to cover stains before painting. Besides a paint roller and tray, you will need a brush or edging tool for corners.
Preparing the Walls
Preparing the wall is time-consuming, but the paint will last longer and look better if the wall is properly prepared before new paint is applied.
Break the wall preparation into steps to make it easier. Wash the wall, and fill holes or cracks with plaster. Let the plaster dry, and then sand down the plaster so it is flush with the surrounding area. Sand down any other imperfections, to make the wall as smooth as possible.
Apply sealant over stains. Let the sealant dry completely.
Painting the Walls
Stir the primer and apply a layer to the wall. Put it on a little thickly; a good coat of primer makes the painting easier. Let the primer dry completely before continuing. If the wall was originally dark and is being painted white or another light color, it may require an extra coat of primer.
Mix the paint thoroughly. Paint separates when it sits, so make sure the color is completely blended.
Use the roller to apply paint to the largest part of the wall. Paint corners with the brush or edger. Let the paint dry completely and then inspect the wall for uneven color. If necessary, apply a second coat.
