The right shade of yellow can make or break a room.
Adding yellow to a room can instantly brighten the room and make it look more cheery. However, there are many shades of yellow that will not look good on any wall. There are several tips that can help anyone determine the best shade of yellow for their room. Paint color selection is a serious process and should not be rushed. If the process is rushed, you may end up with a yellow that you are not happy with.
Determine Shade
There are thousands of different shades of yellow. It is important to determine what range and brightness of yellow that you want to use on your walls. Lighter colors will make rooms look light and airy. Darker shades of yellow will bring elegance and formality to a room. Bright yellows look cheery, while dark yellows can sometimes appear drab. Think about what kind of yellow you would like to look at on a daily basis.
Consider Decorations and Furniture
One way to help determine the correct shade for your room is to consider your decorations and furniture. The best painting strategy is to use complementing colors. Darker furniture would benefit from a richer color of yellow. Lighter furniture will look better in a room with a lighter shade. If there is a color of yellow present in your furniture or decorations, consider using that shade or a variation of that shade for the walls. Paint stores can even match shades if you take in an object that has the yellow that you want.
Check Lighting
Hang several yellow paint samples from the same area of wall for several days. Note how you feel looking at the different colors over time. The lighting in the room may change how different yellows look, so make sure to check each yellow sample in several different lights. Once you have narrowed down your choices, test two to four different yellows by painting a 2 foot square area of each color on a wall of the room. Leave the colors there for one week to determine which is your favorite yellow.
Determine Sheen
Decide what sheen you want to have for your yellow paint. Flat colors are more formal looking, but they are the hardest to clean. Semigloss is a balance between the appearance of flat and the durability of high gloss. High gloss is the easiest to clean, but is not recommended for walls because of the reflection factor. A flat yellow produces a more formal appearance and glossy yellows look informal.
Application
Yellow paint is often sheer, so application is sometimes more difficult than with dark colors. Always use a light-colored primer over the walls before starting to paint yellows to prevent the previous color from peaking through the yellow top color. Use at least two to three coats for even coverage.
