I Wish To Fresh paint My Enamel Sink

Sinks are available in a wide array of colors, designs and price tags.

Paint does not adhere correctly to an enamel sink and will end up looking worse than before you started. However, you do not have to waste time and money installing a new sink and instead can change the look of the enamel sink with a generally inexpensive do-it-yourself refinishing kit.

Repairs

Before you can begin to refinish an enamel sink, you must first examine the structure of the sink. If you find any chips or cracks, repair them before continuing. Sink repair kits are available at home improvement stores to repair small cracks and chips. After you have repaired the damage to the sink, remove the caulking by scrapping it off carefully with a paint scraper.

Cleaning

The sink must have a clean surface free of debris for the refinishing to adhere properly to the enamel. Clean the sink as you normally would and use an all-purpose cleaner and lint-free cloth. Remove soap scum buildup, mildew, rust and any problem areas that would cause an improper seal on the sink. After the sink is completely clean, rinse with water and wipe it dry with a towel. Next, saturate a clean cloth with acetone and wipe the inside and outside of the enamel sink with the cloth. Let the acetone dry on the surface. To protect the faucet, fixtures and drain, cover them with masking or painter's tape.

Refinishing

To begin the refinishing, remove the lid from the bonding agent can in the refinishing kit. While holding it 6 inches from the sink drain, spray a light coating on the enamel sink while moving outward from the drain. When applying the bonding agent, use a sweeping motion that moves from left to right while overlapping each stroke. After you have covered the entire sink with the bonding agent spray, wait 10 to 15 minutes. Once you have removed the lid from the paint coating, hold it 6 inches from the sink drain and apply in short strokes while moving out from the drain. Apply three coats of the refinisher paint coating to the enamel sink, waiting five minutes between each coat. Wait at least 48 hours before using the sink.

Considerations

Before using the refinishing kit, make sure to read, follow and familiarize yourself with the instructions and warnings included with the kit. Protect the area surrounding the sink by covering it with a drop cloth or plastic tarp.
